Game for Blame

Over at democraticSPACE, Greg thinks I'm participating in the blame game. And maybe I am. Or maybe complaining about "the blame game" is a good way of sitting on the fence. But I wasn't trying to lay blame as much as balance the scales with a little necessary perspective. In any case, here's a little more blame for your pleasure ...

James continues to milk [sorry, crap link, reg required] the gun issue again in a cover story in today's Star and notes:

Too many comfortable citizens, black and white, stood around and even voted for governments who dismantled the social safety net built up over decades.

It's not clear if that's an accusation or an admission. If it's the latter, James did more than "stand around". He goes on to mention the former premiere:

In 1995, Mike Harris cut welfare payments by 22 per cent and also decimated the social infrastructure by chopping core funding for the programs. It will take a decade or more of activism to repair the damage, much of it being felt now in the gunplay throughout the vulnerable neighbourhoods.

It's easy to blame Mike Harris, but for two terms James was a vocal supporter of Mel Lastman, who was just as bad. You can call it "blame" if you want, but for the past decade many people have been vocally arguing against certain attitudes and actions, warning that they would have consequences -- that the public good was being attacked -- while Royson James plugged his ears and went "La la la la la la la la la!!!" And for those people, his apparent conversion is a bit rich.

Update: Globe article on the issue.
