Rich People's Toys
William Thorsell is used to defending the indefensible, back in the day Frank magazine nicknamed him "TorySell" because he was a vocal Mulroney partisan. But this is one fight he should avoid, 'cause the proposed ROM South Tower is a monster that needs to be stopped. It's bad for two key reasons:
Height It's way too tall. I like tall buildings: I generally approve of the Minto Towers, I thought it was unfortunate that the NY Towers were built shorter and more squat than they were supposed to be. But you can't just stick extremely tall buildings willy-nilly throughtout the city. Context is important and buildings of similar mass generally should stick together. There is nothing even remotely this size in the vicinity -- there are hardly any residential buildings this height anywhere in the city. And compare it to the ROM; if you lay it on its side it's longer than the museum ... once built, the contrast will make the ROM seem tiny.
Purpose This condo is for really rich people. Our city's elite seem to think that public institutions like the ROM are their playthings. Is it appropriate for a public institution to link itself so closely to the super-rich, especially at a time when the gap between the rich and the poor in this city is growing? Thorsell is selling out our public space to the rich.
In the end, it all boils down to context. It's the wrong type of building and wrong size of building in the wrong place. Stop it, stop Bill.
