Guns, Guns, Guns

It is a bad time to be poor,
cause we don't give a shit no more.

If you want to go for help, don't go next door.
The line's been drawn and staked outside.

It really annoys me that Kinsella knee-jerk linked to and agreed with a column by Royson James who claims that Miller isn't showing enough leadership during the "gun crisis" (the post includes a mostly ridiculous and unproductive thread of comments). James' article (Wanagas has a much better column on the issue), complains about Miller and compliments John Tory for using the situation for a photo op ...

Way back in '97, it was people like Royson James and Alan Tonks who sided with the Tories on the isue of Toronto amalgamation: a plot concocted to neuter and shut up the old city of Toronto. While most citizens saw through the plan and understood the motives, Royson James betrayed the rest of us and sided with Mike Harris. At the time, opponents of amalgamation argued that the Tories' plan would result in a harsher city and increased crime ...

... and now Royson James complains that the mayor isn't tough on crime? I mean, talk about gall!

When the Harris Tories were in power, they said that it's a dog-eat-dog world ... so is it any surprise that the young men -- today's "gangstas" -- who grew up in that climate are following the Tories' lead and have chosen to be hard and tough? Sure, get tough on crime but recognize that this is a sign that the neoconservative policies and attitudes of past governments are failing lower income citizens.

But wait, there's more! When in power, the Tory rednecks opposed any and all attempts at gun control -- it is, again, a dog-eat-dog world -- and launched a legal challenge against the fed's gun registry. Now John Tory complains about guns? Huh? His party LOVES GUNS!

James and John Tory supported the policies that helped create that environment, now they criticize Miller for being soft and absent. It's their mess, he's just stuck with it.
