Hot Docs '09
Sorry about lack of posting ... I was busy with a little work for Hot Docs, which kicked off tonight and runs for the next ten days! Coming up this Sunday evening is Alan's new doc, A Hard Name. NOW gave it a good review: On the surface, the half-dozen hardened ex-?cons trying to get by on the outside in Alan Zweig’s doc seem tough and unpredictable, not people you’d want to meet in a dark alley. But time – pun intended – has given many of them insight into their lives; they candidly reveal histories of early childhood abuse (a common denominator) leading to a cycle of crime and prison. ... The ending, featuring archival footage hinted at earlier in the film, is unbelievably moving.
Shot without narration, the four characters talk to the camera about their lives with utter honesty, admitting to loneliness, difficult childhoods and problems dealing with sudden life changes.
