Canadian History Moment

You may sleep like a wee baby at night, but Canadian history is on the move 24/7! Here's a shameful chapter from our nation's past ...

The Biomechanical Insectoid Dionne Quintuplets
with
Brother Lou as Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe

What follows are excerpts from the personal journals of Dr. Dafoe:

MAY 29, 1934 - Rain
Exhausted. The past few days have been full of activity and amazing events. A young farm woman gave birth to not twins nor triplets ... but quintuplets! More amazing than the number is that the children seem to be a strange combination of insect and machine. I am astonished at such a rare thing! During the births, Nurse Brundle called it a miracle and said the children are blessed. Surely good things await them in life!

SEPTEMBER 4, 1936 - Sunny
The father never stops. As the girls grow, he insists that they be returned to the farm. He is a small man, he wants them in his care only so he can rake in the cash. Does he not see how much effort we have made to care for the children? Can he not see how fragile they are? Can he not see the risk of exploitation?

AUGUST 3, 1938 - Cool
This spectacle is moving too quickly, there is temptation everywhere. I have tried to manage normal lives for the girls, but every day there is a new offer. It never stops. I don't hate the people who stare at them through the one-way mirror ... there are thousands per day now. Nobody seems to miss the few we poach for feeding. EeeeEElax is especially fond of live human flesh.

I am more and more convinced that I am managing a stage attraction, a freak show, rather than raising children. The father rails against us. He is demanding custody.

JUNE 29, 1940 - Windy
A man named William Stephenson visited and recruited the girls to participate in the war effort. They agreed, and I have allowed it. Fortunately, their metal husks have proven to be virtually indestructible, so I fear little for their safety. Stephenson thinks the Americans can be convinced to assist Britain. I can't see what would motivate them.

JANUARY 14, 1943
All is lost! That father, damn him! The girls are to be returned to his custody. At this point, what is to be done? Could he fail them any more than I have? More than any of us has?

The quints were returned to their parents in 1943. Dr. Dafoe passed away a short time later.

This has been your Canadian History Moment!
